Programme Notes

What kind of piano is this?

The recording that inspired this toy is contemporary neo-classical piano, close to the post-minimalist school of Einaudi and Max Richter. A low bass note and a high melody note land together on every beat, and three inner notes roll between them in steady sixteenths.

The harmony is plain F major with a few borrowed chords. The Db major 7 and Bb minor 7 come from F minor, and they give the piece its gentle, wistful turn before it settles back home.
